FLIP THE SCRIPT TRIP: Understanding Ethiopia’s true narrative
Hosted by Mercy Branch Inc.
August 10-19, 2018
Join us for a new kind of journey into the heart of Ethiopian culture.
This is not a mission trip, nor is it a project trip, where we will be doing something. Instead this is an entirely different kind of trip – a trip for those who want to humbly listen and authentically learn. For far too long, here in the west, we have been guilty of perpetuating a false narrative blanketing countries in Africa. Many times we can come across as if we, as a people, are superior to people in Ethiopia, not necessarily with our words, but with our actions. Sometimes even well-intentioned mission trips can perpetuate the narrative of “poor Ethiopians needing white saviors to come in and fix things”. Ethiopia has certainly not escaped this narrative. It is one that tells of poverty and famine, of corruption. We toss around words such as underdeveloped, third world country, starving children, AIDS, and orphans, but when this becomes our single perpetuated narrative, we have completely missed out on the bigger truer narrative that is Ethiopia. This is a grave danger, as we neglect everything that we can learn from this country that has been in existence since the beginning of time.
This trip has been designed to confront that false narrative, and to dig deeper into what Ethiopia really is, and who her people really are. This trip is for people who have been to Ethiopia countless times, or for those who have never been. This trip is for parents who have adopted Ethiopian children and want to understand the truth about their child’s culture and heritage. This trip will allow people to experience parts of Ethiopia that tell a completely different story – a story of flourishing, not one of floundering. We have been given a sacred invitation to participate in the culture to listen and learn, and we extend this invitation to you.
We are looking for a team of 15 people age 21 or older, who are willing to listen with humility, understanding that what we may learn might be very different from what we thought we knew. This is a trip for people who are willing to go beyond the surface and into the depths and set aside preconceived notions and stereotypes. If you are interested in being selected for this unique trip, please fill out the application. If you have any questions please email us at email@example.com.
“Africa and its people are the most written about and the least understood of all of the world’s people. This condition started in the 15th and the 16th centuries with the beginning of the slave trade system. The Europeans not only colonialized most of the world, they began to colonialize information about the world and its people.”
John Henrik Clarke
